My favorite part of this group by far when I’ve attended over the years, is the preparation and facilitation of the moderators (JD Sell, Jasmine Dillavou, Cymon Padilla, Caleb Isaiah Butcher); and the resulting on-topic, yet varied questions and discussion that followed. This Socratic-style conversational exploration of topics (and the selection of topics) were tremendously thought-provoking and stimulating. For example, check out these past event topics on their Facebook page.
It was such a pleasure to hear different voices and observations and to contribute my own. The weaving together of ideas created a new tapestry of understanding and was super pleasurable and satisfying.
Not only because of an increased bump in knowledge regarding subject matter but also because of getting to know others whom care about the subject and have their own specific-to-them, unique ideas.
This kind of connecting is invaluable because it widens my view of society while revealing our commonalities as people.
During the discussions there were occasional moments of, “Let’s find something to be mad about and push against.” But that was not the overall feel or focus in my experience.
I wish there were many more of these groups going on constantly in our city and world!
Then at the end of the time everyone present who wants to, can go around the circle (key arrangement – a circle of chairs) and share about their latest endeavor, upcoming show, or work, etc. in order to invite support.
Ideally – and realistically much of the time – this kind of thing also results in a lot of inspiration creatively and I also thoroughly enjoyed that.
