Judith and I met in 2021, when I interviewed her for this story about some backyard performances she organized in Green Mountain Falls during the pandemic.
Then she came on the podcast in 2022 to discuss art and healing, “Trust & Music” and played some drum music while we recorded which I’m still thankful for, and if I remember correctly resulted in the best kind of “artbumps” for me (body chills as the result of an encounter with touching beauty). She also facilitated a related meeting later, during which women recovering from trauma all got a chance to drum loudly. It was impactful and restorative.
I just heard from Judith recently, that the now-called Mountain Soul Drummers (formerly the Womyn Drummers) have been performing more around town and have grown in numbers. Last month (April 2024) they welcomed attendees on their way into the ENT Center for a staged reading of Andrea O’Reilly Herrera’s play The Presence of Absence (a Cuban nocturne).
I saw them, along with other groups, perform at this Concrete Coyote event last summer (2023).
In addition to being a highly skilled and experienced musician and “sound healer,” here is more about Judith from her website:
“With 40 plus years of exploration in the realms of sound, music, rhythm, and voice, including a B.A. in Music Therapy, Judith continues to explore the indigenous and soulful edges of vibration as sound medicine… (She) is an initiated Council Trainer and Guide in The Ojai Foundation lineage (a circle practice that encourages authentic listening and speaking from our hearts), and continues to explore Nature as Teacher … and has been initiated into the Yoga of Sound through decades of study in the Indian Sound Yogic traditions…”
